Property tax rates by town, state by state
Tax by Town copies each state's own statewide rate file, one official file per state, and turns it into a page for every municipality. Only states whose official file could be read and checked are listed; each state page names its source and the date it was checked.
- 1Towns and cities 234
- 2NH median 2025 $16.90
- 3Highest Charlestown $36.54
- 4Lowest Hart's Location $2.62
Median rates
The states quote rates differently. Connecticut sets a mill rate, dollars per $1,000 of an assessment fixed at 70% of value. Rhode Island sets separate residential, commercial and personal property rates per $1,000. New Jersey publishes a general rate per $100 of assessed value and an effective rate on market value. Maine's mil rate is per $1,000, with a ratio Maine Revenue Services certifies for each town. New Hampshire's rate is per $1,000 and built from four parts. Because assessments sit at different shares of market value from state to state and town to town, the bars compare rates, not bills.

Massachusetts' Division of Local Services publishes tax rates by class in its Municipal Databank, but that site does not allow automated reading, so it is not here. Vermont's 2025 tax rate file is a spreadsheet that could not be read in this update (the 2024 file could), and New York and Pennsylvania set rates by school district and county as well as by municipality, so a single town rate would mislead. The methodology lists what was tried.
